Late 2008...Looking Ahead!

What a year! Holding on tight with my agenda- just had to get another part-time job at the Hauser Estate Winery, inspiring views and mountain-top ambiance make it ideal for an artist! My vineyard series of paintings, many done on site with my Landscape class, is for sale at the downtown tasting room at 17-on-the-Square in Gettysburg, PA. New work is coming to resolution..."branching out" into some 3-D wood sculptures, a new series of paintings and some smaller tapestries. Workshops at the Mannings are in the works - one basics class will be offered in July this summer of '09, more info pending! Meanwhile, here are some works for sale! New Plans for Early Spring-Summer '08!

See last post for the Pottery workshops - should be fun! Also have planned a one-person show of paintings at Sparky & Clarke's Coffee Bar in center-city York, PA for May-June. AND one or two Landscape Workshops for early June, before it gets too hot...will also be teaching at the Mannings National Handweaving School again, the first week of August, Tapestry Basics- Tangents and Techniques! This is always a great experience, with students from all over the country! I feel "at home" in Manning's studios, and the camaraderie is always excellent...fiber art folks rock! Details will follow! Famous Artists at Play ( Tues. March 11) – Bisque-ware is just an empty “canvas” for many accomplished artists! True painters love to paint on anything, playing with many surfaces and mediums – Picasso, Matisse, Delauney, Gauguin, Van Gogh and others have tried their hands at painting with glazes on pottery or tiles. So, drop those elitist ideas and learn what real artists have done! Come, laugh and learn with a classically-trained, multi-mused, light-hearted instructor – Andrea Miller Theisson. Bring home your own Art Pottery plate!

The Arts & Crafts Movement & Living With Art Pottery (Tues., March 25)– the philosophy (and lots of fascinating stories) behind the early-20^th Century designs and lifestyle. Form, function and decorative traditions…these folks walked their talk! With examples from Henry Mercer’s Moravian tile works, architectural notes and inspiration, your well-schooled artist-instructor will explain the international renaissance of the artist-craftsperson. Try your hand at simple motifs on simple shapes and have a memorable experience in the Mission style bungalow-studio at the Pottery Poole.

History Meets the Pots (Mon. April7) – Decorative Arts have roots in all cultures. Come & learn about brushwork and glazing motifs from a world of art. Forms and shapes follow traditions, too – Japanese, Chinese, Mediterranean, Germanic, Celtic, and Native American designs will be shown, discussed and demonstrated. Take back your own special interpretation of a historically-based vase, just in timer for spring flowers. Museum & Fine Arts background shared by your instructor, Andrea T.

Firing Your Own History! (Mon. April 21)- Create your own one-of-a-kind tiles, tray or mosaic, with modular pieces telling your own story, using traditional techniques. A bit of art-tile history and ethnic art encouragement, along with an emphasis on YOU learning to create your own style, tell your own story or reflect your own experiences through design! Everyone has a history! Enjoy producing a practical, but totally original result!

Upthecreek in Adams County, PA - an overview

(This is a first for me!) And who is THIS? Another artist, in the out-lands, playing hardball with a conservative area that is, inevitably HOME. I am a native of this area, yet have traveled and/or lived on the West Coast (Santa Cruz mts.), New Mexico, Florida, Vermont, Maine, and Philadelphia (Tyler School of Art) in the late '60s...whew!
I am a "paintweaver," as critically dubbed by methodical landscape painter Neil Welliver during a fellowship I was awarded at the Vermont Studio Center. (I loved this - it is now on my cards!!!) Logical, really - I have a fine arts degree in Textiles, and I specialize in Tapestry, teaching at the Manning's National Handweavers' School, as well as Painting in acrylics, mostly. My style is organic expressionism.
And I teach privately, and sometimes at Harrisburg Area Community College in Gettysburg and Bradley Academy of Visual Arts in York. I "do" mixed media, watercolor, murals....and conservation and displays, consultations. Museum studies are a second interest, and I have enjoyed teaching some local architectural and "backyard archaeology" courses.
I am just recovering from the intensity of 6 years of homeschooling (like mother, like son - the system just didn't work for us) and financially re-grouping. My studio is open by appointment - contact me through this site!
